It’s not exactly a new concept this, arguably common option, to work from home. As such, one would expect that seeing an opportunity, residential products, services, design and even homes would have begun to adapt to the ever increasing requests of a growing body of possible customers who would like to work from home. These people who are working in an Internet Business through online jobs have a requirement for an setting that suits their everyday life and their work needs too.

It’s true, there are a number of products on the market that are produced for those people who Work From Home but it’s fair to say that the offer is fragmented and it takes a level of skill in construction, IT and ergonomics to produce a suitable domestic setting from which one could run an internet organisation. Most people only manage to offer a small amount of the facilities necessary to be comfortable and dynamic.

The brief for a domestic office set up should be generally similar to that of a normal office or corporate workspace. A resident worker needs power, data and a place to sit and a surface to work on as a bare minimum. Add into that the requirement for social interaction, ad hoc meetings, team work and areas for focussed working and the brief starts to look very similar.

The easy and least productive answer to meeting these requirements is to provide a desk, seat, pc, telephone and data connection. On the face of it these pieces of kit will provide the necessary vehicle in (or on, or through) which people can deliver their output. The real question is how does one provide for the rest of the criteria and how do we use advancements in construction and technology to support the requirements for people who work in Online Jobs?

Firstly, let’s deal with the workplace itself. Does it need to be a desk? In a ordinary domestic situation would a desk be an appropriate piece of furniture ? Technology gives us laptops and telephone headsets and the ability to work anywhere on any fixtures. Add to that wireless printing and a web cam and really the office, as was, is now built totally around the person as opposed to a location.

Of course, in these days of corporate responsibility, the idea of using a laptop for long periods of time would give Human Resource and Insurance teams a problem, but the reality is that what we have through technology is a new concept and what we would expect to see is new furniture designs to solve the ergonomic issues.

Secondly, there is the matter of privacy, sound and environmental comfort. A voice conference in a house full of playing children is not encouraging to productive work. Will we begin to see new homes provided with separate space for working? Possibly dealt with as an extension, a loft or even a stand alone unit in the garden.

Whatever the ideas the market is there already and the design industry has yet to react to it.

Working from home is often the best choice for online organisations and one regularly chosen by staff

October 29th, 2009 by Bruce

Over the last 10 years the numbers of internet business start-ups offering online jobs through a workforce who work from home has increased exponentially. Real Estate Managers have reacted to this by offering innovative office concepts, which minimize space use or decrease moving costs. This increased flexibility, which assists the new Internet Business model ( a model in which invention is not necessarily linked to the location of an individual) is idea for homeworkers. However more is required than just new office dividing concepts. The current developments require a new approach on the way that the organization connects with its environment.

In modern management thinking, importance is attributed to the amount of independence a staff member is given. In the internet business model, where a large number of employees have online jobs, some or all of them will Work From Home. This becomes evident in offering different work places, from which an employee may carry out there responsibilities. The problem is that as far as Online Jobs are concerned that position could be carried anywhere the employee can achieve access to the internet, cafes, libraries, boats, or what is now the “established” approach they could just work from home. Though freedom of choice is beneficial, the employee becomes responsible for choosing the optimal place to work.

From the point an employee is made independently liable for the results of his work, he will stipulate the best possible work setting and within many organisations that follow the Internet Business model the choice of that employee will be to carry out their online job whilst working from home.

The key for the firm is to be able to meet that aspiration and offer the necessary support, facilities and equipment to allow that employee to Work From Home. A work station should at the very least be good in providing what it is supposed to. In the case of those employees who opt to work from home then the work place also doubles as a residence, with the usual needs that entails, such as guest accommodation, storage issues etc. Interestingly more and more organisations are finding that employees with online jobs who choose to Work From Home already have most of the facilities and spaces on offer as they merely fit in around existing needs.

The usual domestic dwelling has, in most cases, areas that are acceptable for focused work, screen based or otherwise which are of course needed for Online Jobs. They are also fit for relaxation and contemplation which is without reservation one of the key requirements for knowledge workers whether they work from home or in an office. The home alternative can often beat the office in these terms as, in particularduring the day, home can provide uninterrupted space.

Is it feasible that all jobs will be online in the following twenty years?

October 23rd, 2009 by Bruce

We have see a extraordinary change in the way we, certainly in the developed world, work over the last ten years.

In fact in the last two years the availability of Online Jobs has increased exponentially. The concept of an internet business being something apart from “normal” work now seems ridiculous, online jobs and internet business has become acceptable. There is no doubting that although traditional firms are still in the huge majority it is now acceptable both socially and in a business context to own, operate or just work for an Internet Business.

The thesis that most of us struggle with is connecting the digital world with the physical, aren’t they completely separate? Aren’t internet business opportunities quite limited to theory based services and eBay?

Actually no, with the advantages in technology over the last few years, 3D printing is now a reality and, as the product lifecycle enters the maturity phase, the price of these machines is falling to be within the ability of small businesses. The ability to be able to produce physical things from virtual (software based) designs means that anybody can have what is in essence a factory in their back room. In theory this would allow production to be offered by all who Work From Home.

Think about that for a while .. as markets become more open, more people will be able to work from home, run their own internet business and online jobs will be the rule. Anybody will be to set up a tool making industry for the home DIY market based on how they think tools should look. There will be small markets maybe, and probably not challenging to the big DIY stores but a business nevertheless.

You may argue that not everybody has the wherewithal to run an internet business producing assembly designs for manufacturing, and that is no doubt the case. However the team idea will work in the computing world as well as it did in the early days of retailing in the real world. There will be an army of keen helpers who will support the internet business entrepreneurs, undoubtedly for free, in the same way as Linux was helped, or Wikipedia or any other of the open source collaborative applications that are currently in development.

There is no doubt we will see, actually are seeing, an upsurge in the number of people who will work from home running an internet business and helping businesses who are providing online jobs for an increasing number of people. Once the bulk of people comprehend the power of linking real world production with virtual internet business then we will see another considerable shift in the amount of people who work from home and have online jobs.

Is technical know-how pushing flexible working back down the ladder?

October 19th, 2009 by Bruce

The early 1990’s saw the explosion, at least theoretically and academically, in the flexible working proposition. The thought being that due to the developments in technology anyone could Work From Home. Over the last ten or fifteen years the technology and the commercial reality of Internet Business has got better to the point it is now, not only feasible to Work From Home but in some sectors almost obligatory labelled their business persona’s as nomadic (in general sales) or semi-nomadic (typically management, sales and team leader jobs). These job descriptions found it feasible to exist between the capability to Work From Home and flexible areas in the office or offices inside which they still had a base. Higher up the management chain superior managers and executives found the capacity to be effectual anywhere, in particular in the case of those dealing with National and International groups and time differences.

The mid 1990’s on the other hand, saw another group of flexible worker starting to appear. The surge in Internet Business shaped a different profile. These staff are not part of a corporate machine running their jobs within the framework of touchdown and virtual meetings but rather what would have been a small organization outlet on the high street. They are small service providers and sellers now making money because they can work from home without the high operating cost of property.

On the back of this second wave comes another group, those involved in online jobs. These employees and entrepreneurs in reality make their living by offering services to help the growing virtual market place. In doing so their communication with clients is predominantly via the electronic work media. This new business model alters the idea of flexible working since not only can these organisations be run by people who work from home they can also be staffed by people with the same working patterns.

Is this a chiefly new occurance? Or a return to the pre – industrial revolution patterns of occupation. Are what we now see as new age Online Jobs just a paradigm shift from the requirement to be co-located, brought about by the mechanisation of labour and the process essential for high output, to the skilfulhighly skilled, craft based model of the cottage industries.
