In the few years that it has been opearating, Google AdSense has quickly grown to be the default method of monetization among Internet marketers and webmasters. It is its ease of use and implementation that makes Google’s advertising platform so popular.
To really make money through this program it is imperative that you understand Google’s rules. It is okay to think outside of the box when you work with a company like Google but you need to make sure that even your most outside the box thinking fits within the boundaries of the company. Not following the rules could endanger your AdSense account. The following three mistakes are things you need to make sure that you do not ever do.
One of the most serious mistakes made is masking the ad elements. In other words, you are allowed to change the colors of the ads and their borders to make them fit in better with the rest of your site. Taking this too far, however, would be a big mistake. There are lots of site that do not pay attention to this and they change the ads so that the url of the ads is the same color as the background of the site. Sure it is a good idea to make sure the ads blend in with your site but hiding the URLs is a very big no-no. It is also important to make sure that people can see your ads and that they are not hidden by or overlapped by tables or images. Not only does taking this step ensure that you’re following the rules, it helps you increase the rate of your click throughs and helps you make more money.
Be careful about how you treat your ads because it’s prohibited to call special attention to your ads other than what Google provides for text. Just use what they give you for your ad blocks, different from customizing, and you’ll be fine. The main thing is to avoid any gray areas in which you could be accussed of violating this particular TOS item. Other marketers and webmasters will have no trouble diming you out with Google – so be careful, here.
It is also important that you don’t put your ads on pages for things like “thank yous”, registration pages or any other page that does not contain relevant content. Let’s face it: advertisers only like spending money on advertising that is displayed on pages that contain relevant and targeted content. This is good because the better your content the better your ads will be.
So, if your page doesn’t yet have good content don’t display your AdSense ads until it does.
In summary, this article clearly shows you how important it is to follow the rules of the Google TOS when you put Adsense on your site or blog. If you’ve been paying attention you’ll see that most of these rules are easy to follow and can help you earn more money with the program.
